About the Honor Roll Program

The Illinois Department of Public Health Acute Care Antimicrobial Stewardship Honor Roll aims to recognize hospitals that prioritize and excel in implementing evidence-based practices of antimicrobial stewardship. While nearly 98% of Illinois hospitals have reported successful implementation of all seven of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs, less than 10% have reported uptake of all six of the CDC Priorities for Hospital Core Element Implementation, highlighting a significant opportunity to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship efforts statewide. By focusing on these Priorities, the Honor Roll encourages adoption of targeted strategies to improve the quality and impact of existing antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) and promotes best practices and collaboration across health care facilities to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Antimicrobial stewardship is the effort to measure and improve how antimicrobial medications, including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitic agents, are prescribed by clinicians and used by patients. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship provide a framework for healthcare facilities to implement evidence-based practices that promote appropriate antimicrobial use, improve patient outcomes, and help combat antimicrobial resistance.

The Honor Roll recognizes hospitals at three award levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. These tiers reflect the extent to which hospitals have implemented the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Priorities for Hospital Core Element Implementation. Hospitals may also earn a Collaboration Distinction, which recognizes facilities that work to improve antimicrobial use beyond their own institution across healthcare settings and in their communities. All tiers represent meaningful achievement and a strong commitment to evidence-based antimicrobial stewardship practices.

Hospitals earn recognition by applying through the Illinois Department of Public Health Acute Care Antimicrobial Stewardship Honor Roll Program. Applications are evaluated based on demonstration of evidence-based antimicrobial stewardship practices aligned with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Priorities for Hospital Core Element Implementation. The program offers two application cycles each year, providing hospitals with ongoing opportunities to strengthen and expand their antimicrobial stewardship programs and apply for higher levels of recognition over time.
